Mary Ellen Fahey, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR®) at Montefiore Medical Center, was recently recognized as Elekta's Cancer Registrar of the Year
During the National Cancer Registrars Association’s (NCRA) 36th Annual Education Conference in Palm Springs, Elekta paid tribute our 2010 Registrar of the Year, Mary Ellen Fahey, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR®) at Montefiore Medical Center (MMC) in Bronx, New York.
Recognized for 25 years of service to MMC, Fahey was nominated for her loyalty to the profession and dedication to cancer patient care. An analyst before completing a CTR management course at Lehman College, Fahey entered the cancer registry workforce in 2000. A teacher herself at Lehman College, Fahey now prepares future CTR’s for a career in cancer registry.
“The true embodiment of cancer registry excellence, Mary Ellen is an asset to the medical center and community,” says Linda Fisher, CTR, and Manager of Cancer Registry Services at Montefiore Medical Center. “Generous, sincere and ever so loyal to her colleagues – I’m sure there are many in our field who exemplify similar qualities as Mary Ellen – but none that can match the passion she brings to the profession.”
An honorable mention also was awarded to Carolyn Ingram, CTR, Manager of Cancer Registry Services for New-York Presbyterian, The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell in New York City. To learn more about Elekta’s solutions for decision support, visit www.elekta.com/metriq

Abstract Lives - A Cancer Registry Family History
Abstract Lives: A Cancer Registry Family History includes chapters by Elekta Impac Software employees, Annette Hurlbut and Karen Phillips. Highlighting personal and professional histories, backgrounds, career choices and successes, their personal stories help shed light on the history of cancer registry itself. A former employee of the company, Dianne Hultstrom, also contributed to the book.
Publisher Gayle Greer Clutter, RT, CTR, says the idea for the book transpired when friends and fellow registrars remarked that with many cancer registrars retiring, their history – and hence the history of the profession – could be lost.
“I realized there were two ways that a book like this would be useful,” says Ms. Clutter. “One was the historical interest – how the profession got started and what it was like working in the early days. The other was the advise these professionals could offer to new people coming into the field. Each author describes his or her career decision and offers advise to those entering this field on how to have a successful career.” The book also includes first-hand descriptions of various career paths within the profession, and the skills needed for each path.
The authors from Elekta Impac Software added significant value to the book including editing by Annette Hurlbut. “There are more contributors from Elekta Impac Software than any other company, and it’s obvious they attracted some of the leaders of our profession.” says Ms. Clutter.
Abstract Lives: A Cancer Registry Family History will be available for purchase in fall 2009.
Recognized for her efforts to promote growth and excellent patient care, Deanna Derdelinghen oversees all aspects of the ACoS, CoC accreditation process, management of related cancer program activities and Stamford’s tumor registry. She also helps with grants and proposals for oncology-related continuing education programs, as well as supports physicians with cancer staging compliance and evidence-based treatment planning tools used to track and measure oncology patient care.
“I’m honored my peers nominated me, fortunate for the opportunities I’ve been given and blessed to be a part of such a fine organization,” says Deanna Derdelinghen. “As Cancer Program Manager, I’m involved in many cancer program activities. This affords me the opportunity to participate in, as well as see first-hand all the wonderful things being done to support our patients.”
Described by coworkers as “an individual who contributes greatly to the battle against cancer,” Deanna’s meticulous record keeping and attention to detail helped Stamford become first in the nation to be named a National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers facility from the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). In addition, Deanna’s efforts also enabled the hospital to achieve commendation status from the ACoS/Commission on Cancer (CoC), as well as receive eight out of nine possible commendations from their last two ACoS Cancer Program surveys.
“Simply the best, Deanna is a great asset to our hospital and community,” says Frank Masino, M.D. and Medical Director of Cancer Services at Stamford Hospital. “Without Deanna’s great intelligence, diligence and passion, our program would not have achieved the status it has in our community. The hospital’s accreditations, resulting largely from Deanna’s guidance, also helps assure patients that our program is being held to the highest standards.”
