Elekta Charities
Elekta activities at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 53rd Annual Meeting raised a total of $53,000 for the Miami-based Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to contributing the proceeds from ticket sales for the Elekta Charity Bash on October 1, Elekta made a donation for each ASTRO attendee who had their badge swiped at the Elekta exhibit. During the Annual Meeting, Elekta focused on how the company supports individuals with breast cancer through the breast cancer continuum, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
“Our goal is to provide peace of mind through financial assistance to women and men recently diagnosed with breast cancer, who need funds for basic living expenses while they are going through treatment and often unable to work,” says Foundation founder, Sandy B. Muller. “We encourage breast cancer patients to continue treatment free from worry of financial ruin and distress for themselves and their children. We share Elekta’s vision to improve patient lives during their cancer journey, and we are grateful that our patients will benefit from these charitable activities.”
Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women, with an estimated 1.3 million new cancers diagnosed in 2008. Of all cancers, breast cancer is the second most common in the world. To recognize the significance of this disease, countries across the globe have designated October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the next few months, hundreds of Elekta employees will take to the streets across North America to raise funds through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Light the Night Walk events. Their goal is to bring light to the dark world of cancer.
Elekta will participate in the Light the Night Walks in the four cities where its main offices are located: St. Louis, MO; San Jose, CA; Atlanta, GA; and Las Vegas, NV – but all employees are welcome to attend.
Cathy Jamieson, Workplace Advocate Manager in San Jose, says: “The idea this year is to focus on team fundraising rather than sponsoring or supporting individuals. We want the money that the company donates to encourage employees to work together as a community, while still contributing to the fight against cancer. The Light the Night Walk works well to develop this team spirit.”
Elekta has made a donation of USD 10,000 to the walk in each of the four cities. This means that all employees and their families are welcome to join the walks and attend a party before the walk.
Jamieson explains why Elekta has chosen to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “A lot of research was done during the selection process. We spoke with representatives from the National Brain Tumor Society, the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen foundation, and several others. But we wanted to find something that had the potential to bring our employees together for an event they would all remember. In the end we decided that the Light the Night Walks were best suited.
“The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was able to offer us some key marketing benefits in addition to the employee experience through the Light the Night Walks. Because our software is used in every kind of cancer treatment center, every cancer patient has the potential to be touched by our products,” she says. “But in the end it isn’t about marketing – it’s about working together to do good in our local communities.”
Research funded by the LLS has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation The LLS has invested more than USD 750 million in research, and approximately USD 72 million in fiscal year 2010 alone.
The walks are short, about two miles (3.2 km), at a leisurely pace and each walker will receive a T-shirt and an illuminated balloon to carry during the walk – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

David Greer: “This was a fun day! Our All Are Our Heroes sponsor Elekta presented a big whopper check to The All Are Our Heroes Project and the American Cancer Society. The folks at Elekta were a 2009 sponsor and donated even more to the cause. Sure did feel good to be a part of this.”
The October 31st fundraiser in Chicago was held after Elekta’s 2009 Radiation Oncology Users Meeting (ROUM) and pulled in another $20,000 in matching funds from Elekta, for a grand total of $45,972
“It was a phenomenal gesture for Elekta to host the Charity Bash and further the cause of All Are Our Heroes ,” said David Greer, the Georgia media and marketing entrepreneur who wrote the song All Are Our Heroes and founded the Heroes project. “This project had humble beginnings and we certainly dreamed of it reaching around the world. Elekta has played a big part in that by bringing its message of support to its audience.”
Many of the 1,647 who attended the event also participated in Elekta’s 18th ROUM, the premier meeting for radiation oncologists, nurses, physicists and therapists in town for the 51st American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting.
